SC setback for Justice Varma

In a major blow to Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma, the Supreme Court Thursday dismissed his plea challenging the in-house inquiry report that found him guilty in the cash-at-home scandal and recommendation of the then CJI Sanjiv Khanna to the President and the PM for his removal.
As he refuses to step down, the SC move clears the way for Parliament to hasten impeachment proceedings against the judge, who is at the centre of controversy since this March when a huge cache of half-burnt cash was found following a fire in the storeroom of his official residence in Delhi.
A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih said Justice Varma's conduct does not inspire confidence and his plea should not be entertained.
