H5N1 OUTBREAK: GOVT CULLS OVER 6,700 BIRDS

A day after bird flu (H5N1) outbreak was confirmed in a poultry farm in Puri district, the state government has swung into action as it has culled over 6,700 birds as part of containment measures, a senior official said Sunday.
The state government resorted to mass culling of the birds after the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, confirmed that samples collected from Bada Ankula in Delang block of the district tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus, he added.
The official also said that more than 6,700 birds were culled Saturday and Sunday following standard operating procedure (SOP) lay down by the Union government.
