Fintech must power the green transition
Orissa POST
|June 10, 2025
India's pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2070 is not just an environmental commitment—it is a multi-trillion-dollar economic transformation challenge. As the country transitions to a low-carbon economy, financial technology (fintech) must be recognised as a crucial enabler of this journey, especially in democratising climate finance and bridging last-mile gaps.
India is already a global leader in digital finance, with 11.3 billion UPI transactions recorded in April 2025 alone and fintech adoption standing at 87 per cent. This deep digital infrastructure offers an unprecedented opportunity to align technology and finance with climate action.
GREEN FINTECH
Fintech can help India meet its climate goals by enhancing access to green finance, streamlining ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) data, and enabling platforms that support carbon credit trading, peer-to-peer green lending, and micro-investments in solar, EVs, and clean tech.
