Dune vegetation to arrest coastal erosion

In the coastal belt of Odisha, where the Bay of Bengal steadily reclaims the shore, villagers in Tandahar under Puri's Sisua gram panchayat have begun rebuilding their natural bulwark against disasters. The small settlement, part of Astaranga block in the district, has launched a community-driven dune vegetation restoration effort to combat sea ingress and protect livelihoods.

The environment protection initiative, pioneered by Bichitrananda Biswal, recipient of Odisha State Wildlife Conservation Award, and supported by Gilehrio and Sabuja Sakha Astaranga, aims to restore a stretch of 5km of the beach that has suffered erosion and habitat loss. Native dune vegetation is being replanted to stabilise sand and revive the ecological balance of the coastline.
