CM launches awareness campaign against tobacco

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi launched a year-long state-wide awareness campaign against the use of tobacco and other addictive substances on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Saturday.
Addressing the gathering at Lok Seva Bhawan in the City, Majhi emphasised that awareness is the only effective solution to prevent tobacco-related deaths.
"Every year, nearly 14 lakh people in India lose their lives due to tobacco consumption. Ten per cent of all deaths in the country are attributed to tobacco. The time has come to seriously reflect on how we, especially the youth, can be freed from this menace," the CM said.
He urged the public to join the campaign against intoxicants, adulterated liquor, and toxic drugs, calling upon everyone to 'Say No to Tobacco, Say Yes to Life'.
Understanding the deadly effects of tobacco is key to preventing its use, he said, adding, "Even saving one life through awareness is a major achievement."
According to Majhi, the campaign, which began Saturday, will be conducted in four phases throughout the year.
