Watchdog approves by-election candidate

THE watchdog says a Reform UK candidate who unsuccessfully stood in the county council election will be able to try again.

A by-election is being held for the Newark West seat on the county council after Reform’s victorious candidate in the May 1 ballot, Desmond Clarke, resigned as a councillor just days into his role.
The July 3 election will therefore involve voters choosing a fresh Newark West councillor.
Reform has confirmed that it wants its candidate to be Caroline Hinds, who unsuccessfully stood in the Farndon and Trent division on May 1.
The selection came despite legal doubt being cast over a similar situation in Northamptonshire. A postponed election is being held there after the death of a candidate near the original election day.
