Strikes threatened as university fails to rule out compulsory redundancies

STAFF at the cash-strapped University of Nottingham are planning strikes after bosses failed to rule out compulsory redundancies.
The university said in early April that it planned to cut more than 300 jobs after concluding that a £40 million cuts package would not be enough to protect it from a fall in numbers of lucrative international students and a steep rise in costs.
The university announced last month it was considering slashing professional service roles by 258 and removing 98 vacant posts during phase one of its “Future Nottingham” programme.
But the University and College Union (UCU), which represents academics set to be targeted by later phases, has now voted in favour of industrial action over the “drastic” cuts - paving the way for future strikes.
