Starmer eyes rethink on benefits for mental health

SIR Keir Starmer has questioned whether the Government spends too much on benefits for people with mental health illnesses, rather than funding more wider support for the conditions.

The Prime Minister said he was concerned that people on benefits in their 20s could end up in a life of welfare dependence.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Sir Keir was asked whether the Government would tell people with anxiety and depression that it is not an excuse to stop looking for work.

In response he said: “I think we need to look again at this issue of mental health and ask ourselves a fundamental question, which is, would we not be better putting our money in the resources and support that is needed for mental health than simply saying, it's to be provided in benefits.
