Seven held after mass brawl

VIOLENCE NEAR MIDNIGHT LEAVES ONE MAN SERIOUSLY ILL IN HOSPITAL
METAL poles and bottles were used as weapons in a mass brawl that left a man in hospital with serious injuries and forced the closure of a major city road.
Officers were called to Alfreton Road, near its junction with Raleigh Street, at 11.55pm on Wednesday, to reports of a fight with weapons.
Seven men, aged 23, 29, 30, 33, 34, 38 and 43, were all arrested on suspicion of affray. The 30-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, while the 33-year-old was additionally arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Police said the injuries to the man in hospital are thought to be life-altering.
