TWO DERELICT BUILDINGS WOULD BE DEMOLISHED

- By OLIVER PRIDMORE oliver.pridmore@reachplc.com

TWO empty buildings near Nottingham's Broad Marsh development could be flattened to make way for huge blocks of student accommodation.

The plans would create 329 new student bedrooms next to the Green Heart park, with the existing buildings knocked down due to their "very poor structural condition".

Plans have not yet been formally lodged with Nottingham City Council, with the authority's leader having previously pledged that there would be no student accommodation as part of the development.

But the latest plans fall just outside the actual development site and developers claim they would help to "kickstart regeneration across the wider Broad Marsh area".

The two buildings are Hanson House on the corner of Carrington Street and Collin Street, which was formerly the Hanson Chinese Restaurant and supermarket.

Next to Hanson House is the former Big City Tyres on the corner of Collin Street and Melville Street, which would also be knocked down.

Developers say: "The existing buildings are in very poor structural condition, with independent assessments confirming that retention is not viable."
