MP contacts the police as edited audio clip sparks 'stop the boats' row

AN MP has contacted the police over claims she said “I don't care if we stop the boats” at a meeting with residents.

Jo White, the Labour MP for Bassetlaw added she had been “deliberately and fraudulently” misquoted by an audio clip in which the statement can be heard.

The audio recording was first shared to Facebook by Dr Kelvin Wright, the Reform county councillor for Worksop South, who claims he was sent the clip “by a concerned resident at an HMO meeting” with the MP.

The comments, allegedly made at the meeting on Thursday, refer to the policy of stopping illegal immigration and boat crossings by asylum seekers into the UK, often described as ‘stopping the boats’.
