Library will open early 2026 at latest - council

SHERWOOD Library will open in early 2026 at the latest, according to the leader of Nottingham City Council after confirming work to fix a number of defects has restarted.

Based in Spondon Street, the old library was deemed not fit for purpose in 2017, and the council sold the site to a local developer, Hockley Developments, to build a new one.

Problems with the development first became apparent after a previous contractor, Nottingham-based Dako Construction, collapsed into administration at the beginning of 2023.

The library building was then handed back to the council at the end of 2023 for the final fit-out - but its opening has been delayed ever since.

A summer opening last year was missed following the discovery of a raft of problems with the building, and a “tug-of-war game” between the developer and the council over who was responsible for rectifying them has caused further delays.

However, speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) this week, council leader Councillor Neghat Khan said she hopes the library will open later this year or early 2026 at the latest.
