VICTIMS REMEMBERED ON SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF ATTACKS

- By JOSHUA HARTLEY

Join walk in memory of Barnaby, Grace and Ian

THE families of the three people killed in a series of horrific attacks that rocked Nottingham in 2023 will return to the city today to mark two years since the fatal stabbings.

In the early hours of June 13, 2023, Valdo Calocane killed University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, before stabbing 65-year-old school caretaker Ian Coates to death and using his stolen van to attempt to kill three more people.

Paranoid schizophrenic Calocane was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after admitting to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility in January 2024, as well as the attempted murders of Wayne Birkett, Marcin Gawronski and Sharon Miller with Ian Coates' stolen van. This sentencing proved to be only the start of the fight for justice for the families of those killed, whose efforts have now resulted in a two-year inquiry into the failings and missed opportunities that led to the killings.

Today the Webber, Kumar and Coates families will visit Ilkeston Road in Radford and Magdala Road in Mapperley Park where the deadly attacks took place. They return having learnt of countless mistakes by Nottinghamshire's health services and police prior to the attacks and hoping that a recently-commenced judge-led inquiry will hold those responsible accountable.
