Jailed school worker will have to sell home after being told to pay back £77k she stole

A BUSINESS manager at a primary school who abused her position to steal more than £77,000 has been ordered to pay back the entire amount by this summer.

A Proceeds of Crime Act hearing at Nottingham Crown Court heard how Wendy Gill benefited from £77,395 in cash she took when she worked at Bramcote C of E Primary.

The 61-year-old was jailed last summer after admitting her crime. Now she will have to sell her home to compensate the school.

Recorder Samuel Skinner ordered that she pay back the entire amount by July 13. He said: "The benefit figure is £77,395 and the available assets are the same."

The Proceeds of Crime Act allows the police to apply for cash to be seized from criminals who have made their money illegally. It can see criminals forced to sell properties, cars or jewellery that belong to them to pay the cash back.

The money that is seized is usually split 50-50 between the police and the Government and is often used to fund community projects. Importantly, if a convicted criminal comes into money later in life that he or she does not currently have, police can still apply to have that seized.
