ENTREPRENEUR ACCUSED OF GIVING PATIENTS UNREGULATED DRUGS
A NOTTINGHAMSHIRE businessman who could be extradited to the US over allegations his firm smuggled unapproved drugs into the country has slammed the case as a "staggering injustice".
Entrepreneur Dr Sukhi Ghuman, who is from Newark and founded Bingham-based security firm Octavian Group, has been accused by prosecutors in America of giving patients unregulated versions of lung and pancreatic cancer drugs through clinics operated by his firm Colton Health.
The 47-year-old and his wife, Kiran, are facing extradition to the US, where they are both facing 25 counts, and a district judge will hear the case at Westminster Magistrates' Court from January 19-23 next year.
American legal documents said: "The object of the conspiracy was for defendants to engage in a scheme to unlawfully enrich themselves by smuggling, introducing, receiving, and delivering for pay foreign unapproved drugs with the intent to defraud and mislead as to a material matter, that is to defraud and mislead Medicare and Medi-Cal (healthcare programmes) by presenting claims based on FDA-approved versions of drugs, and mislead patients into believing they were receiving FDA-approved drugs."
