VILLAGERS PUT AT RISK FROM TOXIC FUMES
FIVE members of a group that made thousands of pounds by illegally dumping waste on land near Newark have been ordered to pay back the cash they made doing it.
The illegal waste site, run by three members of the Canner family at Long Bennington, was close to residents, putting them at risk from toxic fumes.
An area the size of a football pitch was used daily to burn and bury rubbish between 2019 and 2020. Environment Agency officers raided the site in April 2020 with Lincolnshire Police and discovered that lorry-loads of shredded waste were regularly being accepted onto the site.
Last year the Canner family - father Paul, 54, mother Judith, 55, of Main Road, Bilstone, Nuneaton, and son Joshua, 29, of Laburnum Avenue, Newbold Verdon, who ran the site, were all jailed for the roles they played.
This week, at a Proceeds of Crime Act Hearing at Nottingham Crown Court, five other defendants were ordered to pay back cash they made from dumping rubbish there.
Daniel Lippitt, 55, of Lub-besthorpe Road, Leicester, made £12,236.06 and has £10,000 in available assets.
