Enduring appeal of lockdown-era classic
Nottingham Post
|January 23, 2026
BACK in March 2020, the world was a very different place, with global lockdowns shutting people off from each other.
The launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons couldn't have come at a more poignant time, providing players with a holiday from life and a means to connect with friends online.
It was such a success that the National Videogame Museum created the Animal Crossing Diaries digital exhibition in 2024 to document the phenomenon.
Close to six years later, lockdowns may be behind us but New Horizons is still going strong.
It's been a while since the last update but the launch of the Switch 2 with its new features seems to have triggered Nintendo into giving it some more love.
