JAILED GANG LEADER HAS ONLY £19.5K TO HIS NAME
ONE of Nottingham’s most notorious criminals, who made more than £1m heading up a gang dealing vast quantities of high-purity drugs, has been ordered to pay back just a fraction of what he made.
A Proceeds of Crime Act hearing at Nottingham Crown Court heard how Craig Moran benefited to the tune of precisely £1,173,628.72 from his illegal enterprise. But he has just £19,518.40 to his name.
‘And fellow conspirator Jodie Danson, who made an astonishing £2.1m from his involvement, has been ordered to pay back just £2,500.
A sentencing hearing last year at the same court heard how Moran headed up a Bestwood group, which used guns and encrypted phones in a bid to evade capture.
When he began his fresh illegal enterprise, the 43-year-old leader had not long been released from prison for being the getaway driver in the 2003 armed robbery of the Time Centre in Arnold which saw jeweller Marian Bates murdered.
The Proceeds of Crime Act (or POCA) allows the police to apply for cash to be seized from criminals who have made their money from ill-gotten gains.
It is typically used after drug dealers have been sentenced and can see criminals forced to sell properties, cars or jewellery that belong to them to pay the cash back.
