Driver who killed Vasile doing nearly twice limit

JUDGE: 'YOU EFFECTIVELY DROVE STRAIGHT THROUGH HIM'

- By JOEL MOORE

A NOTTINGHAM driver was travelling at almost twice the speed limit when he hit a "beloved grandad" on a busy city centre road.

Vasile Predoiu, 66, died at the scene of the late-night collision in Alfreton Road, Bobbers Mill, on March 17, 2023.

The father of three was crossing the 30mph road when he was hit by Zakariya Navid, who was driving his Audi A3 between 56mph and 58mph. Navid was uninsured and tried to buy temporary cover immediately after the crash.

Despite the wet and dark conditions, Navid would have had twice the amount of time to spot Mr Predoiu standing in the middle of the road had he been following the limit.

But Victoria Rose, prosecuting, said the defendant instead "made no effort to slow down or avoid" the victim and "drove straight into him".

"[Mr Predoiu] didn’t use the pedestrian crossing. However, Navid should have been aware that particularly in that area at that time of night, in a residential area, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise," she said.
