Car drivers urged to take more care after 19% rise in collisions with trams

COLLISIONS between trams and cars are on the rise in Nottingham, as the city's tram operator has issued a warning for motorists to drive more carefully.

An increase of 19 per cent in crashes involving trams and motorists was observed this year compared to 2024, NET (Nottingham Express Transit) said.

The operator added that, between January and October this year, 205 tram emergency brake activations took place to avoid collisions with motorists, with many of these taking place due to drivers going through a red light.

In June, three people were taken to hospital after a crash between a tram and a car on Queen's Walk in The Meadows. The tram involved derailed as a result of the collision and the clear-up of the scene took several days.

Following a string of collisions which resulted in a number of tram cabs requiring repairs, NET was forced to implement an emergency timetable in June.
