ADAM LATER DIED AS A RESULT OF BURST APPENDIX, INQUEST TOLD

- By JOEL MOORE

"I CAN'T walk anywhere," Adam Hussain strained, barely audible as he breathlessly pleaded for help from a 999 call handler.

It was about the only full sentence the 23-year-old muttered during the conversation, yet an ambulance was not deployed to his address in Clifton.

It followed days of repeated calls to emergency services, in which Mr Hussain complained of worsening abdominal pain, an inability to stand and move and blood in his urine and vomit.

He died from multi-organ failure, caused by a burst appendix, just two days later, on May 16 at the Queen’s Medical Centre.

An inquest into his death, held yesterday, heard the exchange between Mr Hussain and an East Midlands Ambulance Service (Emas) emergency medical advisor.

In the call, at 8.23pm on May 14, he sounds breathless and barely able to get his words out, telling the handler he is dizzy and unable to walk anywhere.

After reading through a script of followup questions about his condition, the Emas worker originally says she will dispatch an ambulance under category three - deployed for an urgent but not life-threatening situation.

However, seconds later she tells Mr Hussain he must instead go to his nearest walk-in centre due to his condition not being “immediately life-threatening”, to which he says he is unable to.
