PROGRAMME AIMS TO SUPPORT 18 TO 21-YEAR-OLDS INTO TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT

- By JOE LOCKER Local democracy reporter

ALMOST £500,000 is being spent on young people in areas of Nottingham that have “entrenched unemployment” in a bid to get more people trained up and in work.

A new programme will be opened up to around 180 young people, with the aim of getting 80 of them into employment, education, or training.

Some of the money will also be used to employ a recruitment specialist for 12 months, and pay for recruitment and employer events

Nottingham City Council says the £490,000, which will be coming from the East Midlands Combined County Authority, will be spent on the programme for young people in workless households in the north of the city and Clifton, which have been described as areas with “entrenched unemployment.”

According to a report from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, published in July, the percentage of 16 to 24-year-olds in Clifton with A-level qualifications or higher is 47%, compared to 58% in the wider city and 56% in England.

The overall unemployment rate is also higher than England, at 7.4%.
