A MAJOR cash boost has been secured to dramatically improve a "complicated" road layout in North Devon's biggest town that should benefit thousands of pedestrians every day.
A total of £862,900 has been approved to make improvements to the A3125/Longbridge junction in Barnstaple, a piece of road that has to deal with huge numbers of competing demands.
Besides its 18,700 daily vehicle movements, the junction connects the town centre, bus and railway stations, Petroc College, schools, industrial estates, the hospital and more.
Not only that, but data showed 5,000 people walk and 600 cycle across Longbridge every day, creating a sometimes complicated scene.
The plan will mean new areas of shared use and segregated space for people walking and cycling as well as a significantly simplified crossing arrangement.
