IMD Says Power and Communication Lines May Be Disrupted, Fruit Crops Damaged

- Vijay C. Roy

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds is likely to persist across northwest India over the week, which may disrupt power and communication lines and damage standing horticulture crops such as mango, banana, papaya, cherry, and loquat.

Similar weather conditions, triggered by western disturbance, have also been predicted for Gujarat and Southwest Rajasthan between 5 and 8 May, and for Uttarakhand on 6 and 7 May. The IMD, in a statement, has advised caution, particularly for areas vulnerable to severe weather-related disruptions.
