The "air-conditioned city" suffered from 35°C in February, which is unheard of
Doctors at the Gorakhpur All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have noticed a steady increase in the number of people contracting hydroa vacciniforme, a rare skin disease caused by exposure to strong sun. What is worrying is that the disease, seen mostly among people living in hot deserts where exposure to extreme heat is common, is rising in Gorakhpur, which lies in the Himalayan foothills of Uttar Pradesh.
The data analysed by doctors at AIIMS Gorakhpur showed that during April to August 2024, the area had seen temperatures cross 40 degrees Celsius on 39 days against just six in 2021. The forecasts this year are also for record-breaking heat waves across the country.
Research has also shown a rise in the number of persons showing symptoms of "seasonal disorders" as early as February. A recent report from Delhi said more than 40 children were diagnosed with xeroderma pigmentosum, a condition marked by severe sun sensitivity. These children are able to venture out of their homes only during the night. What can be more dangerous and debilitating for these youngsters?
