SC quota sub-categorisation verdict: Cong to finalise stand in 2-3 weeks

The Congress top brass brainstormed on Tuesday over the Supreme Court’s decision allowing states to create sub-categorization within the SCs and STs, and said it will decide its stand on the issue in two-three weeks, after AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge holds consultations with the party’s chief ministers, state unit chiefs and civil society groups.

In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court last Thursday held that states are constitutionally empowered to make sub-classifications within the Scheduled Castes (SCs), which form a socially-heterogeneous class, for granting reservation for the uplift of the castes that are socially and educationally more backward.
