The Supreme Court has agreed to consider forming a Constitution bench to hear challenges against the Modi government’s practice of passing certain laws as Money Bills. This method, allegedly used to bypass the Rajya Sabha where the government lacks a majority, has been applied to laws like the Aadhaar Act and amendments to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The issue has sparked significant political and legal debate, with the ruling NDA currently holding 101 seats in the 245-member Rajya Sabha, short of the 123 required for a majority. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh is among those who have challenged the Aadhaar Act’s passage as a Money Bill under Article 110 of the Constitution.
