Mary E Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Dr Shimon Sakaguchi were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Monday for their pioneering discoveries that uncovered how the body prevents its immune system from turning against itself—a process known as peripheral immune tolerance.
Brunkow, 64, serves as a senior programme manager at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. Ramsdell, also 64, is a scientific adviser for Sonoma Biotherapeutics in San Francisco, while Sakaguchi, 74, is a distinguished professor at Osaka University’s Immunology Frontier Research Centre in Japan.
