Ex-AAP functionary Nair gets bail in money laundering case

In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Vijay Nair, the former communication in-charge of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), after nearly 23 months of imprisonment in a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

The two-judge bench, comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti, observed that the "right to liberty under Article 21 (of the Constitution) is a sacrosanct right which needs to be respected even in cases where stringent provisions are invoked." The court relied on the legal principle of "bail is the rule and jail is the exception" cited in the recent bail granted to AAP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and BRS leader K Kavitha in the same case.
