Mum in plea after daughter died from drinking 'fake alcohol'

A MOTHER has joined forces with other grieving families to campaign for lifesaving change to government policy after the death of her much-loved daughter from methanol poisoning.

- By PAUL BRITTON

Kirsty McKie, 38 and from Bramhall, Stockport, died in Bali in 2022 after unknowingly drinking contaminated alcohol.

Now her mother Margaret McKie, 66, has joined a campaign involving other bereaved families calling for the Foreign Office to change its official guidance to travellers visiting certain countries, including Indonesia. Collectively, they want the government to recommend that travellers should avoid drinking all spirits in the countries.

Just last week the Foreign Office added methanol poisoning guidance to its official travel advice pages for eight new countries: Ecuador, Kenya, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Uganda and Russia.

Margaret said Kirsty, who studied at the University of Manchester, was well aware of the dangers and only ever bought quality alcohol. Her fiancee at the time ran a wine business and a restaurant, and she said they both knew the dangers well.
