New cyber-security wave at coastal town

TO most people in the North, the seaside borough of Scarborough is best-known for its sandy beaches, donkey rides and fish and chips.

But being out on the coast and miles from the nearest centre of employment - with a seasonal economy that's overreliant on tourism - has in recent years been holding the area back.

With a lack of high-skilled jobs locally, young people don't tend to stay and many leave to find work elsewhere.

In recent years, however, local leaders have developed a different vision for the area one based around the growing importance of cyber-security.

So-called 'clusters' are developing in places like Manchester, Newcastle and Cheltenham, each focusing on a particular element of the growing cyber-economy and bringing in specialist companies to generate economic value greater than the sum of their parts.
