West Hollywood to become first in L.A. County to ban most pet sales

SPENCER GRANT A WEST Hollywood ordinance will ban the sale of most pets, including reptiles.

The West Hollywood City Council last week passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of rabbits, amphibians, arachnids, birds, fish, reptiles and hermit crabs beginning May 1, 2026. The ordinance expands upon an existing law, passed in 2010, that prohibits stores from selling dogs and cats in the city.

Animals that come from shelters, animal control facilities, humane societies and animal rescue organizations will still be able to be sold.

The only other city in California that bans the sale of live animals is Del Mar in San Diego County, according to the Pet Advocacy Network.
