AMMANFORD were beaten by eight wickets at Bridgend in the South Wales Premier Cricket League.

RAIN'S A PAIN AS AMMANFORD PAY FOR LOSING A CRUCIAL TOSS

There remain doubts over whether the match should have been played. The nearby river burst its banks after heavy rain the previous night and flooded the entire expanse of Newbridge Fields.

Whoever won the toss was going to enjoy a huge advantage as they could insert the opposition on a fierce pitch.

Bridgend won the toss. Ammanford were put in to bat.

Some balls skittled through, others reared up off a length.

The match was curtailed to 25 overs each, with Ammanford managing to dodge and stumble their way to 84-9.

Skipper Rhys Davies batted bravely for 21, while brother Rhodri (19) and opener Owain Baxter (15) were the only others to reach double figures.

Tomos Jones was Bridgend's main wicket-taker with 4-14.

With the wicket drying from a westerly wind, the Bridgend batters had by some distance the easier task to negotiate.

Skipper Sam Wood led the way with an unbeaten 46, and the home side passed Ammanford's total with seven overs to spare.

The defeat dropped Ammanford back to eighth in the table, one spot above the relegation places currently occupied by Cardiff and Swansea.

On Saturday Ammanford welcome Abergavenny to the Park.

Penarth emerged as the main challengers to Neath at the top of Premier League 2 after they saw off fellow title hopefuls Carmarthen Wanderers by 23 runs.

They are now just 12 points behind Neath after The Gnoll side's home match against Mumbles was called off after heavy rain.

Penarth batted first against the Wanderers and a stand of 129 between skipper Sai Kamuni (71) and Adeeb Ilyas (51) helped them to 242-9.

Joe Phillips took 3-30 for the Wanderers and Chris Turrell 3-39.
