Wirral honours its legendary son Dixie Dean

AN EVERTON football legend has been given Wirral’s highest honour, 45 years after his death.
William Ralph ‘Dixie’ Dean was one of the greatest goalscorers in English football history.
Dean holds the record for the most goals scored in a single season in topflight English football with 60.
He is seen as one of the greatest centre-forwards of his time and was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
On October 13, the late footballer was awarded his birthplace’s highest honour, an award which goes back to early medieval times. The Freedom of the Borough is the highest award Wirral Council can bestow and is given to people from Wirral who have made an exceptional contribution.
Councillors unanimously voted to give out the award.
Cllr Jeff Green, an Evertonian, said Dean was a “son of Birkenhead with unlimited talent.”
