My personal remembrance day

I RARELY get through Remembrance Day without the emotion of the occasion taking over, not least as I reflect on my own father Harry who fought in World War Two, and my grandfathers, Tom Rogers and Adam Wareing, who were involved in World War One.

My personal remembrance day

I was with the crowds in a rainy Lime Street last Saturday as our Royal British Legion veterans and others began to parade their colours in front of St George's Hall.

Suddenly, a group of them opened up with a song that brought huge applause. I believe might have been either traditional battalion marching refrain 'The King's (Liverpool) Are Coming Up The Hill' or 'Glorious, Victorious, both defiant and inspirational offerings aimed at instinctively pulling our lads together in challenging situations. I would be grateful for any local clarification on this.

Whatever the case, it was a moment that made me supremely proud of all of our service men and women, Army, Air Force, Royal, Merchant Navy and civilians whose bravery helped to bring us through times of intense conflict.

My father joined the General Service Corps (GSC) on July 2, 1942 which confirms my belief that he lied about his age when he signed up for WW2, three months short of his 18th birthday.
