POLICE IGNORED RUDAKUBANA’S WARNING AFTER TEEN WAS CAUGHT WITH BLADE YEARS BEFORE ATTACK
THE Southport killer told police officers he wanted to stab people and make poison after being found with a knife on a bus more than two years before the dance party attack.
Axel Rudakubana went missing from his home when he was 15 with two Lancashire Constabulary officers finding him at the back of a bus after the driver reported the “stroppy” teenager for not paying his fare.
The officers, PC David Fairclough and PC Eve Rhodes, recalled Rudakubana was “very calm” and produced a “kitchen knife with a dark coloured handle and a short non-serrated blade” from his pocket.
PC Fairclough told the ongoing Southport Inquiry that the decision was made to return the teenager back to the safety of his own home.
But during the 10-minute journey back to his home Rudakubana told the officers he had the knife because “I want to stab people’, smiling while doing so.
The inquiry heard Rudakubana gave a “bizarre account” of why he wanted to stab people, telling the officers that he wanted his phone seized by police because there were “embarrassing videos” on his Instagram and TikTok accounts that he wanted deleting.
Rudakubana, who already had violent convictions from an incident in December 2019, also told the officers he wanted to make poison in the future. The teenager had already taken delivery of castor beans and scientific equipment with the intention of making a crude form of the deadly toxin ricin at this time.
The officers put Rudakubana’s behaviour down to a “bad mental health episode” and PC Fairclough recommended the teenager did not have capacity to go through the criminal justice system.
But giving evidence to the inquiry yesterday, the officer said the right decision would have been to arrest Rudakubana.
