Eco-home plan for former Army base
Leicester Mercury
|January 07, 2026
A SECOND World War Army base left derelict for 70 years could get a new lease of life.
-
Plans have been submitted to turn the abandoned site near Redmile, Melton, into an eco-home with wild-grass roofs and shimmering bronze walls, nestled in its own nature reserve.
The applicants want to create a family home where three generations can live together under one roof, according to planning documents.
The five-bedroom house would accommodate children, grandchildren and elderly parents.
There would even be space for a collection of three classic cars.
The design takes inspiration from the site's wartime past, according to documents, echoing the grassy mounds that once hid fuel tanks and the curved Nissen huts where troops slept.
