Battery recycling method wins prize

RESEARCHERS have received national recognition for pioneering a sustainable alternative to conventional battery waste recycling.

The group, based in the University of Leicester's School of Chemistry and Centre for Sustainable Processing, received the Innovation Award - Highly Commended at the Faraday Institution Community Awards 2025.
Dr Jake Yang, from the university, said: “Recycling lithium-ion batteries doesn't get any simpler, or greener, than using just oil and water.”
Currently, the UK exports lithium-ion battery waste, known as black mass, to Europe and Asia for reprocessing, due to the hazards and regulatory complexity of domestic treatment.
