Airport let illegal level of pollutant enter river
Leicester Mercury
|April 17, 2025
EAST Midlands Airport (EMA) has admitted illegally polluting the River Trent with chemicals used to de-ice planes and runways.
The airport pleaded guilty at Derby Crown Court to three charges relating to incidents between January 14 and February 4, 2022, when the airport breached its environmental permit conditions.
All charges involved excessive levels of biochemical oxygen demand (Bod) in wastewater discharged from the airport's facilities.
The Environment Agency grants EMA a permit to discharge de-icing materials into the Trent and Diseworth Brook between November and April.
