VE Day 80 in Mole Valley

Well done to everyone involved in organising so many inspiring VE Day 80th Anniversary commemorative events and activities throughout Mole Valley last weekend!

In Dorking, there was everything from live 1940s music and flash mob dancing to a special vintage car display and a chance to enjoy the serenity of Downs Solicitors' heritage garden at the rear of their offices in the High Street.

And what better way to travel around the town than on an original horse-drawn omnibus that once ran from Holmwood to Dorking - a brilliant nod to our area's local heritage!

Meanwhile, in the Swan Centre in Leatherhead, there was the opportunity to hear the fantastic Mole Valley Silver Band playing a range of classic 1940s tunes, alongside the Leatherhead Theatre Academy performing 'Things to do in a Blackout', an exciting new play written by Reece Lane, set in an underground Anderson shelter towards the end of WW2 and comprised of real-life stories from local survivors.

However, above all, we hopefully took a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice all those years ago, to ensure that we could continue to enjoy the freedom of living that we so often take for granted.

A Night at the Races

On a Friday night towards the end of April, only a stone's throw away from Epsom Racecourse, around 40 members, partners and friends of Downswood Tennis Club gathered for a fun Race Night in aid of both the club itself and also the East Surrey Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Over the course of the evening, everyone present placed bets on a series of eight video horse races, all very kindly sponsored by local businesses and individuals, with the tension and excitement rising as the lights went down for each race!

Many thanks to Fin O'Regan for organising the event, which raised over £530!
