On the weekend of June 21 and 22, the 5th Dorking (URC) Brownies celebrated 100 years of Brownies, meeting at and being sponsored by, the URC Church in West Street, Dorking.
They celebrated on the Saturday night by having a sleepover in the Church Hall, playing numerous fun, wet and messy party games and decorating their birthday cake. On the Sunday they took part in the Church Parade Service by writing and reading out their own prayers, reading the Bible readings and helping the Minister in various activities.
After the Church Service they planted a cherry tree in the new Remembrance Garden bed, at the front of the Church. This cherry tree replaces one which was planted 50 years ago, by the then Brownies, to celebrate 50 years of Brownies being at the Church. Unfortunately, that tree died last winter, so it seemed very appropriate that a new cherry tree should be planted by the Brownies, this year, to celebrate 100 years.
After the tree planting, the Brownies and the rest of the congregation enjoyed refreshments, including a lovely birthday cake.
If your daughter would like to join the 5th Dorking (URC) Brownies and is aged between 7 and 10 years, please contact Gill Morgan at fifthdorkingbrownies@ gmail.com.
Box Hill Regency Picnic
In collaboration with National Trust Box Hill, Leatherhead Museum will be celebrating Jane Austen's 250th birthday with a special Box Hill Regency Picnic this Saturday, July 5, gathering from 12noon on Donkey Green. Costumes are optional but encouraged. Bring a picnic or treat yourself at the cafe. This is a free public event with no tickets required.
Pride and Prejudice in Meadowbank Park
Continuing with the Jane Austen theme, as part of this year's Plays in the Park, Dorking Halls will also be celebrating the author's 250th birthday with a very special performance of 'Pride and Prejudice' in Meadowbank Park at 4pm on Sunday, July 13.
