National Book Lovers Day on August 9 is a time for the reader in all of us.
Fiction facts
1 4th Century BC-scrolls are created. One of the first ways that humans kept records. Sometimes made from papyrus.
2 2100 BC-first book is written. Known as The Epic of Gilgamesh, the book is a mythical interpretation of a political figure, surviving as a collection of poems.
3 The Sunday Times Bestseller List, launched on April 14, 1974. This makes it one of the oldest and most influential book sales charts in the UK. Among titles on the first list was Jaws by Peter Benchley.
