Taking a swipe at yet another tale of the young tech billionaire
Lancashire Evening Post
|September 26, 2025
Given the world of TV and film's fondness for a true story, it's hardly a surprise that the "tech billionaire" tale has become a micro-genre of its own.
It got off to a flying start with the award-laden The Social Network in 2010 which charted the rise of Mark Zuckerberg and the creation of Facebook.
Then there was the less successful Jobs, in which Ashton Kutcher took on the mantle of Apple guru Steve Jobs.
On the small screen there has been the fascinating rise-and-fall story of The Dropout about Elizabeth Holmes and her company Theranos which falsely claimed to revolutionise blood-testing. Holmes is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence for fraud.
And so now into the fray, we have Swiped, a new film released straight to Disney+ about Whitney Wolfe Herd, played by Lily James, the co-founder of the app Tinder, which it wouldn't be unreasonable to say, revolutionised the world of dating.
I'm lucky enough - if that's the right expression - to have been married since before the rise of online dating.
But such is the ubiquity of Tinder and its imitators that even those who've never used it, like me, are aware of its simple, game-changing mechanics-you swipe right on the picture of someone you like the look of, and if they've done the same to you, you can begin an online conversation. If you don't like the look of them, you swipe left, and they're rejected.
