Robin Hood, with his band of men, still riding through the glen

It remains one of the best theme tunes on TV. It goes - altogether now: Robin Hood, Robin Hood riding through the glen. Robin Hood, Robin Hood with his band of men. Feared by the bad, loved by the good. Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Robin Hood.

Robin Hood, with his band of men, still riding through the glen

Though it was made and first screened five years before I was born, The Adventures of Robin Hood is one of my earliest - and fondest-TV memories.

It was a British television series comprising 143 half-hour, black and white episodes broadcast weekly between 1955 and 1959

Forget Michael Praed and Jason Connery - forget the whole sorry series with its 'the hooded man' refrain, mists and mystic nonsense.

There will be, for me, only one TV Robin Hood and that's Richard Greene. As the man in Lincoln Green, he had a swagger in his step, a feather in his cap and a bow and arrow in his hand.

On the big screen no one out-swashbuckles Errol Flynn as Robin Hood.
