Piggybacking the Traitors – but Genius Game misses the mark

After The Traitors proved that games centred on betrayal make great TV, it feels like every channel has tried to create their own version. ITV's latest attempt? Genius Game.
Inspired by South Korean game show The Genius, Genius Game sees 11 contestants compete in complex parlour games to win a cash prize and be crowned "the ultimate genius". With alliances, treachery, and a member of the UK's national treasure club as host, Genius Game feels like a springtime edition of The Traitors, but it is nowhere near as polished.
As a challenge show for Britain's brightest minds, it predictably features complicated games. But the central premise feels far too knotty for casual evening viewing.
Each episode comprises a Main Match with all players as they compete for not only cash represented by garnets but immunity represented by tokens of life. The loser of the main match picks an opponent for the Death Match, whoever loses this is eliminated from the game. Is your brain frazzled yet?
