Important change to how courts operate
Lancashire Evening Post
|July 26, 2025
Earlier this year there was a tragic accident in which a teenage boy died in Lancashire.
This awful story was covered widely by the press and the name of the youngster widely publicised. Then, after the story was out, it emerged a court order had been issued banning further publication of the child's name in the media.
No court reporter was in the hearing when the ruling was made so it was allowed to stand.
The problem was the legislation used to place the order did not allow for it to be made about a deceased person - in other words it was a mistake by the court to agree to the ban.
