That's the very worst thing about the British summer? Hayfever, perhaps? Love Island? The relentlessly awful weather? The astronomical cost of a week at Center Parcs? While these are all pretty dire in their own way, there's one thing that tops the lot. Roadworks.

- Kate Wobschall

Or to be precise, temporary traffic lights that spring up with depressing regularity the moment the summer months arrive.

Utility companies, communications providers, bridge inspectors, water firms... it seems everyone is at it now that the nights are a bit lighter.

Not far from Wobschall Towers is a busy four-way junction where two main roads meet. There are permanent traffic lights which usually keep things flowing.

Until recently, when the council decided it was time to resurface one of the roads and paint fresh markings on it.
