'No system defects'as HMP Kilmarnock inmate dies of natural causes

The death of a prisoner in custody at HMP Kilmarnock has been ruled unavoidable following a Fatal Accident Inquiry.

Andrew Whiteford, 38, had been admitted to Crosshouse Hospital in May 2022 and died on May 31 of that month while still in custody.

Mr Whiteford had hypopharyngeal cancer as well as type one diabetes and died of natural causes as a result of the illnesses.
