Respect for the river kept Srinagar safe. Modern construction has erased that legacy.
When the Dogras ruled Kashmir in the 19th century, they knew one truth: the Jhelum cannot be controlled, only respected.
Each spring, as snow melted and the river swelled, they gave it room. Floodplains were left untouched, marshes allowed to breathe, and Srinagar was protected by hand-carved channels like Rambagh, guiding excess water safely away from homes.
Canals eased pressure on the river and gave the city resilience. That caution has faded.
