Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) hosted its first-ever Directors' Conclave on Monday, bringing together all its former directors for a landmark roundtable titled “SKIMS Legacy and Way Forward.” The event marked a moment of reflection, appreciation, and vision, as veteran leaders of the institution shared their experiences and perspectives on reviving SKIMS as a centre of excellence in healthcare, research, and education.
Director SKIMS, Prof. Mohammad Ashraf Ganie, who also serves as Ex-Officio Secretary to the J&K Government, welcomed the distinguished gathering and emphasized the importance of such an event. “These doyens envisioned SKIMS as an institution of excellence. Their experiences will be a guiding light for me in leading this institution forward,” Prof. Ganie said.
He recalled the contributions of each former director, including the founding director, Dr. A.K. Nagpal, acknowledging their pivotal role in transforming SKIMS into a premier healthcare institute with a global reputation.
Dr. Muzaffar Maqsood Wani, Professor of Nephrology and Secretary of Faculty Forum SKIMS, coordinated the felicitation of the guests and expressed admiration for their enduring commitment to the institute.
In his address, Dr. A.K. Nagpal, the founding director, reminisced about SKIMS's formative years and stressed the importance of institutional autonomy. “SKIMS should continue growing like AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and other international institutions such as Harvard and Oxford. The autonomous public hospital model has proven effective across the globe,” he stated.
